Hanoi prioritizes resources for child welfare

The action month in favor of childhood carries the message of uniting efforts to prevent child abuse, injuries, drowning, and traffic accidents; and protect them in cyberspace.

THE HANOI TIMES — Hanoi has launched Action Month for Children 2025 to build a healthy and friendly environment for all children and ensuring that their rights are fully exercised.

With the theme "Prioritizing Resources to Achieve Goals for Children", the program aims to raise awareness and encourage collective action for children's well-being.

The launch of the Action Month for Children 2025 on the occasion of International Children’s Day (June 1) serves as both a call to social responsibility, reminding us that investing in children today lays the groundwork for the country's sustainable development tomorrow.

"I and my classmates feel fortunate to grow up in an environment of love. Love must be demonstrated by deeds, sharing with friends in need, studying hard and living responsibly. I will try to become a good citizen and contribute to the nation's development, as encouraged by Hanoi's leader in her speech," Vu Bao Ngoc, a ninth grader at Hanoi's Lomonosov Education System, shared with The Hanoi Times.

At the launching ceremony of the action month on June 1, Vu Thu Ha, Vice Chairwoman of the Hanoi People's Committee, encouraged residents to participate in the month-long event with meaningful actions.

"This will promote child protection and care, engaging different stakeholders and addressing child abuse and violence," said Ha.

In addition, a series of activities for children will be held for a safe summer vacation environment.

The month will also include visiting children in difficult circumstances, providing scholarships, donating gifts, and funding recreational facilities in underserved areas.

The vice chairwoman emphasized Hanoi's focus on children with special needs, ensuring they all receive gifts on International Children's Day.

"In the city's 'Action Plan for Children 2025,' all districts are asked to improve recreational facilities and organize free swimming lessons for underprivileged children from now until the end of the year," Ha stated.

The Hanoi Department of Health is tasked with mobilizing social resources for disadvantaged children, providing them with gifts and scholarships, and paying special attention to children who are malnourished, disabled, have congenital heart disease or other serious illnesses requiring long-term care, or have been victims of abuse or violence.

The city will also disseminate the Law on Children and mobilize sufficient financial resources for children, especially those in their early years.

A nation's future begins with its children

Dao Hong Lan, Minister of Health, stressed that children are the country's young shoots and represent the country's future, and called on localities to pool resources to achieve the goals for children during the launch of the Children's Action Month 2025 on May 31.

"The objective of Action Month is to build a safe, friendly, and healthy environment in which children can fully exercise their rights and ensure their all-around development. It also aims to raise awareness and responsibility among competent agencies, organizations, and individuals in handling child issues and preventing child abuse," said the minister.

"Over the years, Vietnam has improved its legal and policy framework for children, enhanced education and healthcare services, reduced child mortality and malnutrition, and implemented child-friendly healthcare models, periodic check-ups, and mental health consultations," said Lan.

However, there remain challenges, including drowning incidents, school violence, and child abuse, particularly in disadvantaged and ethnic minority communities.

To fulfill the goals set for children in 2025, the country needs different resources and the engagement of people from all social strata while government agencies and localities should invest in programs focused on children; strengthen grassroots healthcare systems; and educate the younger generation to preserve cultural identity and gain access to global knowledge.

The Ministry of Health, particularly, is committed to the physical and mental well-being of children.
