Vietnam strengthens semiconductor ties with SEMI SEA
Vietnam is urging international organizations to connect global investors and experts with local businesses and research partners.
THE HANOI TIMES — Vietnam is committed to fostering an environment conducive for SEMI Southeast Asia (SEMI SEA) member companies to invest and do business in the country’s growing semiconductor sector, said Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung at a meeting with the association’s delegation on April 16.

He called on SEMI SEA to convey this message to its member companies.
The deputy prime minister also encouraged SEMI SEA to strengthen policy advice, help train human resources, and continue to support Vietnam in organizing domestic and international exhibitions to promote the industry.
At the meeting, SEMI SEA highlighted recent cooperation with the National Innovation Center (NIC) and the Ministry of Finance, as well as Vietnam's upcoming participation in SEMICON Southeast Asia 2025 in Singapore, May 20-22. The event will feature a Vietnam Pavilion and Investment Forum to showcase the country's business environment to regional and global partners.
In recent years, NIC and the Ministry of Finance have worked closely with SEMI SEA to host events such as SEMIEXPO Vietnam 2024 at the NIC Hoa Lac Hi-tech Park and facilitated delegations to SEMI exhibitions in Malaysia and South Korea.
On the same day, Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Chi Dung also met with senior executives from leading global semiconductor companies, where he reiterated Vietnam's commitment to attracting high-tech investment.
He welcomed KL Bock, Senior Vice President of Western Digital Global Flash Backend Operations, and encouraged the corporation to expand its investment, production, and R&D activities in Vietnam.
Founded in 1970, Western Digital is a global leader in data storage systems with annual sales of US$16 billion. The company has manufacturing facilities in Malaysia, Thailand, China, and the US, and has yet to establish operations in Vietnam.
In a meeting with SungHun Kim, General Director of Amkor Technology Vietnam, Dung urged the company to further expand its operations in Vietnam, particularly in advanced chip packaging. He asked Amkor to work closely with NIC to train skilled engineers and to consider setting up a research and development center at the innovation hub.
Founded in 1968, Amkor Technology is one of the world's leading semiconductor packaging and test companies with annual revenues of $6 billion. The company has invested approximately $1.6 billion in projects in Vietnam.
