Flamboyant flowers light up Hanoi’s streets

As Hanoi enters a period of intense heat, phuong vi (flamboyant) flowers burst into bloom with clusters of bright red blossoms as flames, lighting up the city’s streets.

THE HANOI TIMES — The flamboyant trees (Delonix regia), whose petals are sizable and vivid, were introduced to Vietnam by the French in the 19th century and have since become deeply rooted in the country’s seasonal landscape.

Throughout June, Hanoi's streets, parks, and lakes are adorned with the vibrant red of flamboyant blossoms against the summer sky, signaling the arrival of summer and the end of the school year.

Tall trees with wide canopies provide welcome shade for pedestrians on sweltering summer days.

The variety blooms annually from May to July, becoming a familiar sight in the city.

The trees are in full bloom along roads and lakes such as Hoan Kiem Lake, Truc Bach Lake, and the To Lich River.

The flowers come into full bloom in early June and the trees are commonly planted in schoolyards.

Flamboyant flowers bloom in vibrant clusters and gradually shift from deep red to lighter shades over time.

Their brilliant hues light up the landscape under the summer sun, leaving an unforgettable impression on visitors to Hanoi during this time of year.

The romantic roads around Hoan Kiem Lake are now adorned with brilliant red flamboyant flowers.

The scarlet blooms illuminate each nook and corner of Hanoi, rendering the metropolis even more vivid and animated.
